Lisa,
Some of the benefits of using CAS:
1. Your applications can now participate in single sign on
2. You are reducing the number of applications that have access to the
password
3. You can allow external parties to authenticate your users without gaining
access to passwords
There are more, but those are a few of the major reasons to put up a CAS
server. You can also CASify Shibboleth and have Shibboleth delegate
authentication to CAS (thus allowing it to participate in single sign on).
