CAS basic install questions

Hello,
  A few questions from an absolute newbie to CAS that I am sure is a piece of cake for the forum members:
  - Do I need to install/use Spring in order to use JA-SIG CAS client?
  - Is JA-SIG CAS client supported on Linux? I am wondering since the latest version does not have the .tar.gz distribution.
  - I am assuming that JA-SIG CAS client is an alternative to Yale Java Client. Is the JA-SIG version the one that is going to be further developed?
  - Is there any doc on how I go about setting up a proxy? That is, how do I achieve things explained in the documentation about Proxy Authentication or CAS 2 Architecture.
