How to validate ticket?

>From what I read (document pointed to by Scott and others), it appears that once I receive a ticket from CAS after successful authentication, I need to call  ServiceTicketValidator to do this. (The document pointed to by Scott in his reply describes such a method as a way to authenticate users "manually"). However, other docs I have read (http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/web/library/wa-singlesign/) seems to suggest that I can get the ticket validated without writing any code- just by configuration changes. Can someone please describe how that can be done (automatic authentication)? Or am I totally off?
