There was nothing suspicious in my classpath or the tomcat lib
directory, so I just deleted my maven repository, untarred a fresh copy
of the source tree and rebuilt my webapp. This solved whatever mismatch
was causing the problem!

I'll leave it the way it is for now, as all seems to work fine. Now on
to actual service integration...
