CASAuthNHeader purpose in mod-auth-cas

Pardon me if this is FAQ but couldn't find any reference but the README
which isn't really explicit (or the source ;)

What is the purpose of having the possibility to use CASAuthNHeader in
mod-auth-cas protected applications ?

Isn't REMOTE_USER already set and available normally ?
