Speeding up build..

Is it possible (to make my builds faster), to skip these items

Downloading: http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/com/sun/jndi/ldap/ldapbp/1.0/ldapbp-1.0.pom

There are a couple (at least) times when my build does this
downloading different pom's, shouldn't these be "local" after the
first build?  Why is it still going out to the net to get these every
time?  Is there some way I can have it only check locally for
everything?

I am new to maven and sorry if this is a stupid question.
