ldap read timeouts - query

Hi,
Is the "timeout" property within a BindLdapAuthenticationHandler in
milliseconds?
I'm setting it to 1, and it's not timing out (actually, it doesn't time out
if I set it to 0 either).

If I remove it, but set the "com.sun.jndi.ldap.read.timeout" key to 1 within
the baseEnvironmentProperties of the
corresponding AuthenticatedLdapContextSource, it does time out.

... or am I confused? Could someone explain the difference between these
settings?
